Saw this on Netflix and figured I would give it a try. Damn. this movie was really good! I was not expecting it to be so good, but it was. Snowpiercer 2. Thank you for this thoughtful analysis. I hadn't seen/read any other interpretations or commentary on this movie before. I was pleasantly surprised by the many thought-provoking themes explored within this movie. I wasn't expecting much with Captain America being the face of the movie. I didn't think of this movie in terms of specific political theories such as capitalism. Rather, I thought of it as an interestingly accessible way to present large themes that have been prevalent in science fiction (and other) literature for decades. For example, the idea of starting a colony or new world in a hostile environment with limited resources (think Mars for example) the problem of how to achieve homeostasis in a closed system. How do you manage population growth? How do resources get allocated? What is the history behind inequalities in resource allocation, ie how does classism start? The Machiavellian machinations to make it appear as if the masses have power when in fact the real power comes from the collusion of the leader in the underground (Gilliam- sp? as well as the top (the engineer. What to do with the inevitable entropy- ie parts of the engine breaking down. That was the most evocative to me: the movie's allusion to Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov when we find that the engineer's solution to the inevitable entropy of the train engine is to use use children who fit: Tell me yourself, I challenge your answer. The 1931 Bela Lugosi film is a treasure, one of my favorite films of all time.  This one?  This one is like Donna Langley (Darkmistress of Universal Pictures) spitting in the mouth of my inner child.  Radiates hates. Great analysis man! ill definitely view the film differently on my 2nd viewing. There are some amazing ideas in here. The sets, the costumes, the lighting, the outside snowbound landscape - it all looks fantastic. The basic premise is compelling enough: it's a train that never stops, with a repressed underclass fighting their way up and forward against everything thrown at them by their privileged masters.
Unfortunately not one jot of it holds up to any sort of critical analysis. As soon as the viewer starts to ask awkward questions, it falls apart. It doesn't have anything close to a sense of humour either. Quite a few of the characters are cardboard cutouts or even - and it is not often you see this - a parody of a cardboard cutout,a walking joke in a costume. By the halfway mark, almost everyone has started indulging in ludicrous behavior and / or acting like overemotional idiots. By the three-quarter mark, some truly ridiculous speeches have started to appear, then the plot itself (such as it is) clearly runs out of ideas and the movie paints itself into a corner.
It's visionary, it's trippy, it's wildly eccentric and certainly has elements to it that I've never seen in another movie, but what could have been a great trick story ends up shooting itself repeatedly in both feet. This happens (repeatedly) because the director seems to be far more interested in making artistic points than he is in coherent, competent storytelling, or storytelling at all for that matter. There are attempts to rescue it, but they just add to the mess that results.
I simply don't think that this director understands people very well. He knows about how to make something look stunning, but good looks alone do not a movie make, and once it was finally over I couldn't believe I'd wasted my night on it.
